Two more roster moves

Roster moves
The Arizona Diamondbacks made the following roster moves. The D-backs’ 40-man roster is at 40.
- Recalled from Triple-A Reno: RHP Bryce Jarvis
- Selected from Triple-A Reno: INF Tristin English
- Placed on the 15-day injured list: RHP Ryan Thompson (strained scapular, retro. to 7/5)
- Placed on the 10-day injured list: INF Pavin Smith (strained right oblique)
- Recalled to Major League roster and placed on 60-day injured list: LHP Tommy Henry (left ulnar collateral ligament surgery)
Both of these injury moves were unexpected, as there had been no particular incidents or health concerns expressed about either player. It does mean that, in the bullpen, we only have two players – Shelby Miller and Jalen Beeks – who have been there constantly since Opening Day. We have lost at various points since then: Joe Mantiply (DFA), A.J. Puk, Justin Martinez, Thompaon (all on the injured list), Jarvis (optioned) and Ryne Nelson (moved to the rotation). We’re not yet at the All-Star break. The churn has been real. It’s interesting that we seem to have three long relievers down there now, in Jarvis, Jake Woodford and today’s “starter”, Anthony DeScafani. We’ll see today whether disco is dead or not…
The Smith move is even more of a surprise. He was lifted from yesterday’s game but that was a typical move to replace his bat with Randall Grichuk, in order to get the platoon advantage. 28 of Pavin’s starts this year have seen him replaced before the game’s end, so there was no reason for concern about yesterday’s early departure. In other injury news, manager Torey Lovullo announced that relief pitcher Kendall Gravemen will start a rehab stint in the ACL on Tuesday, and catcher Gabriel Moreno is running the bases and catching. but hasn’t been cleared to use his right hand as yet. So his return would appear to be some way off.
Making his major-league debut will be Tristin English. who has hit .338/.388/.549 for a .937 OPS in Triple-A [usual caveat: it’s Reno] He has been quite the utility guy for the Aces, starting games at both corner infield AND both corner outfield positions for them. However, we could also see him in action on the mound. He was a pitcher in college, and famously, actually WON a game for the Aces last year, pitching two innings in extras. Sadly, his 100% record as a professional was blown earlier this year, but he still has a 2.70 ERA in the minors, allowing just one hit and one walk to the twelve batters he has faced. I’m almost hoping for a blowout today!
