Diamondbacks Re-Sign Veteran Randal Grichuk to One-Year Deal

February 5, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

Randal Grichuk agreed to a one-year deal with mutual option for 2026 to remain with the Diamondbacks.

Outfielder Randal Grichuk will re-sign with the Arizona Diamondbacks on a one-year deal with a mutual option for 2026, the team announced Tuesday. According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the deal includes a base salary of $2 million in 2025, with a $5 million mutual option for 2o26 and a $3 million buyout. So Grichuk is guaranteed $5 million and can earn up to $5ooK in incentives this season. The 33-year-old outfielder played for Arizona this past season. In 106 games, he smashed 12 home runs and drove in 46 RBI along with a .291 batting average. Grichuk was a free agent this offseason who also recorded 74 hits in 2024. Grichuk also succeeded in reaching several career milestones in 2024, for example, putting in 10 years of MLB service, recording 600 RBI, 200 home runs, and 1,000 hits.

Grichuk’s base salary for 2025 is $2 million, with a $5 million mutual option for 2026 ($3 million buyout), per source. So the guarantee is $5 million plus $500K in incentives in 2025. https://t.co/yN9V0Q6h4g

Diamondbacks Re-Sign Randal Grichuk

Grichuk is a veteran who spent four notable seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays. The 11-year veteran also played for the St. Louis Cardinals, Colorado Rockies, and Los Angeles Angels. Grichuk prospered with the Diamondbacks in 2024, sporting an OPS of .875. He was particularly effective against left-handed pitchers, recording a .319 batting average, six home runs, a .914 OPS, and 32 RBI. Grichuk also demonstrated strong plate discipline in 2024, a season filled with career bests. His 47.6 % hard-hard rate and his 7.2 % walk rate compiled by Baseball Savant were both career bests for him. Two other career bests were his patience at the plate, where he only struck out 46 times and his 139 wRC+ (Weighted Runs Created Plus).

These statistics indicate that Grichuk is a clutch platoon player who will provide value through this role in 2025 with Arizona. Grichuk didn’t make his 2024 debut until mid-April as he was recovering from heel/ankle surgery. During his return, he was slowly transitioning back and it wasn’t until later on in the season that his offense picked up. If Grichuk can remain healthy and replicate his 2024 platoon success, he will remain a productive asset for the D-Backs. Aside from injuries, Grichuk also appeared in fewer games in 2024 due to facing mostly left-handers. Grichuk’s platoon role fitted him so well that he’s been recognized as an expert when it comes to facing lefties.
