Buy? Sell? Both?

It’s now July, and the trade deadline looms ever closer, at the end of the month. Arizona sits at exactly .500. That’s actually a game better than they were through the same point in the schedule last year, and they only barely missed out on the post-season. But it perhaps feels like repeating last season’s second-half surge would be harder, since we’ll be missing the likes of Corbin Burnes, Justin Martinez and A.J. Puk, while Eugenio Suarez is already hitting like he did down the stretch last year. How should the D-backs be approaching the trade deadline this year? Looking to add, particularly in areas of weakness like the bullpen? Or take advantage of the seller’s market and cash in on impending free-agents?
Of course, you don’t want to fold on the season too early. Especially considering that ownership has opened their wallets to an unprecedented degree for the 2025 campaign – giving up would certainly damage the chances of that persisting going forward. But there are a lot of D-backs who are scheduled to be free agents at the end of the year. Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly, Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suarez would all, to varying degrees, be of interest to a team looking to strengthen their roster for a playoff run. The team could get back prospects that will help them down the road, though we should bear in mind these are only rentals for a couple of months.
If you were in Mike Hazen’s shoes, what would you be doing? That’s what the poll below is for, but the comments section is also available to give a more nuanced description of your deadline tactics…
