Diamondbacks resume play vs. Reds after another mid-game rain delay

June 8, 2022 by ArizonaSports.com - 98.7 FM

Rain, rain go away.

But unfortunately for those at Great American Ballpark for the Arizona Diamondbacks’ 14-8 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night, the rain didn’t go away.

With the D-backs trailing 9-0 after seven completed innings, the grounds crew brought out the tarp as the contest entered an hour-long rain delay before resuming play in the top of the eighth.

The mid-game delay marks the second consecutive night in which play has been stopped due to rain in Cincinnati.

Monday’s contest, a 7-0 Reds win, was declared an official game after heavy rain caused umpires to call it with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. The inclement weather also caused problems for the grounds crew, who had to bring out a second tarp in order to entirely cover the infield.

Tuesday was a rough day at the office for Diamondbacks starter Tyler Gilbert, who was called up from the taxi squad earlier in the day to make a spot start in place of the injured Humberto Castellanos.

The lefty only went 1.2 innings and allowed seven runs (six earned) on five hits (two home runs) and two walks to go along with two strikeouts on 55 pitches (31 strikes).

Offensively, the D-backs managed to come out of the rain delay with a five-run eighth inning thanks to a pair of home runs from Geraldo Perdomo and Ketel Marte — the former of which was a grand slam for his first career home run — followed by three more runs in the ninth.
