The Arizona Diamondbacks traded first baseman Josh Naylor to the Seattle Mariners on Thursday, as first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan. It is one of the first major deals of the 2025 MLB trade deadline. In exchange, the DBacks will receive left-hander Brandyn Garcia and right-hander Ashton Izzi. The Mariners later announced the deal on their social media.

Diamondbacks Trade Josh Naylor to Seattle Mariners
Arizona acquired the veteran first baseman from the Cleveland Guardians this past offseason in exchange for Slade Cecconi and a competitive balance draft pick. After starting his career with the San Diego Padres, Naylor spent parts of five seasons in Cleveland. From 2022 onwards, he was teammates with his brother, catcher Bo Naylor. In 2024, Josh was an All-Star for the first time.

This season, Naylor is hitting .292 with 11 home runs, 59 RBI, and an .807 OPS. It’s a good follow-up to his best offensive season to date last year, in which he hit 31 homers and drove in 108 runs. With the Mariners, he should provide plenty of firepower at first base. That position has primarily been covered in Seattle by Rowdy Tellez and Donovan Solano so far this season. It is unclear whether Naylor becomes the mainstay at first or enters a platoon situation with one or both of those players, but either way, he will likely get the bulk of at-bats and reps in the field.
As for Arizona’s return, Garcia just made his major league debut on Monday and has made one other appearance since, both in relief. An 11th-round draft pick in 2023, the 25-year-old gave up two runs on four hits in his inning-long debut, but settled down for a scoreless inning in his second appearance, including his first career strikeout.
Izzi, a fourth-round selection by Seattle in 2022, is a career minor-leaguer thus far. This season, with High-A Everett, he is pitching to a 2-4 record with a 5.51 ERA in 47 1/3 innings. He had better luck last season with Single-A Modesto, accruing a 2.85 ERA in 110 2/3 innings.
