Former Cy Young Winner Corbin Burnes Signs Six-Year Deal with Diamondbacks

December 28, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, 2021 National League Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes has signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks, giving them a star at the front end of their rotation. The deal is reportedly for six years and $210 million, with an opt-out after two seasons. Burnes heads to the desert after starring in his one year with the Baltimore Orioles. Before the Orioles, Burnes shined with the Milwaukee Brewers, where he began his career and rose to stardom. The 30-year-old right-hander will look to make a big impact for the DBacks and provide stability to their rotation.

Diamondbacks Sign Corbin Burnes

Coming off his fourth straight All-Star appearance, Burnes is widely regarded as a top-five pitcher in MLB. After breaking out in the 2018 playoffs for the Brewers, Burnes had a rocky 2019 season, before blossoming into a star during the 2020 season. Most notably, Burnes won the Cy Young Award in 2021, after posing a 2.42 ERA and 12.9 SO/9.

Burnes joined the Orioles via trade about a month before the 2024 season and did not disappoint. He had a 2.92 ERA and 181 strikeouts in over 190 innings. Plus, Burnes collected 15 wins over 32 starts.  Additionally, he earned his first All-Star game start and had an excellent postseason outing.

Over the last four seasons, Burnes has averaged a 2.92 ERA and 214 strikeouts per season. He is also an expert at limiting walks, giving up less than 2.5 walks per nine over three of the last four seasons. Overall, Burnes is very good at limiting baserunners. His WHIP over the last four seasons has at most been 1.096, which is still near the top of all MLB starters.

Arguably, the most important part of Burnes’s game has been his reliability and availability. He has started at least 28 games every season over the last four years and pitched at least 165 innings in all those years. These impressive numbers, combined with his incredible stats, demonstrate why Burnes is considered an ace. This belief came to full fruition last year when Burnes was named to the All-MLB First Team.
