Justin Martínez to Undergo Tommy John Surgery, Out for Remainder of 2025

Arizona Diamondbacks right-handed pitcher Justin Martínez will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the remainder of the 2025 season, according to the club’s manager Torey Lovullo. Martínez is already on the 15-day injured list, and the club will transfer him to the 60-day injured list once it opens a roster spot. He will likely miss a large portion of the 2026 season as well.

Justin Martínez to Undergo Tommy John Surgery

The Diamondbacks signed Martínez, 23, out of the Dominican Republic for $50,000 in 2017, and he climbed his way into the club’s top 30 prospects by 2021. He broke into the big leagues in 2023, but struggled, pitching to a 12.60 ERA in 10 appearances. In 2024, Martínez broke out with a 2.48 ERA in 64 appearances, earning a five-year, $18 million extension during spring training. After breaking camp as the club’s closer, Martínez struggled to stay on the field in 2025.

He missed time in May with shoulder inflammation but returned for five appearances before exiting Monday’s game with elbow tightness. The team placed him on the injured list the following day and scheduled imaging. Lovullo said he was “highly” concerned about Martínez following Monday’s game, and today, doctors confirmed the club’s fears by recommending that Martínez undergo Tommy John surgery.

Injuries Continue to Plague Diamondbacks Pitching Staff

Martínez is the latest victim in what has been an injury-filled season for the Diamondbacks’ pitching staff. Corbin Burnes, signed to a 6-year, $210 million deal, underwent Tommy John surgery on June 5 and is out for 2025 as well. The team also lost Jordan Montgomery to Tommy John surgery at the end of spring training. The Diamondbacks placed both Cristian Mena and Kendall Graveman on the 15-day injured list this week. With the club currently sitting fourth in the National League West at 34-34, the front office may decide to sell at the deadline.
