Somehow Making All The Other Blowouts This Year Look Not So Bad
Once again I’m rolling the three days worth of recaps into one article, but we’ll return to the normal schedule next weekend. On Saturday, the Diamondbacks affiliates took two out of four games played, and took just one out of four games played on Sunday. Reno lost the only game played Monday in extra innings. (Sorry for the 2000 words.)
Saturday 6-19-2021
Reno Aces 7 Albuquerque Isotopes 6
Josh Green got the start and went 5.0 innings and allowed 6 runs on ten hits while walking none and striking out three. Green was hurt by the long ball, with two homeruns allowed, including a grand slam and a two run home run, accounting for all the damage done by the ‘Topes. Thankfully, the Aces’ bullpen did their job, with Carlos Navas, Sam Moll, and Miguel Aguilar having scoreless appearances. All three allowed just a hit apiece, with Aguilar and Navas both going an inning and striking out one, while Sam Moll went two innings and struck out four.
The Aces jumped on the board early, with Andrew Young and Josh VanMeter hitting back to back one out solo homers in the bottom of the first inning. The Aces would tack on another run in the bottom of the third, after Nick Heath walked, stole second, and was driven home by an Andrew Young double. The Aces would go back-to-back again to lead off the fourth inning, with both Bryan Holaday and Camden Duzenack hitting back to back solo homers. Josh VanMeter would go yard a second time, hitting a solo homer to lead off the bottom of the fifth. The Aces would score the winning run shortly after, after Seth Beer, Christian Lopes, and Henry Ramos walked to load the bases. Bryan Holaday hit a sac fly to follow, scoring Seth Beer.

Amarillo Sod Poodles 12 Midland RockHounds 11
Amarillo nearly blew it with this one, after leading most of the game, Midland scored three runs in the top of the eighth and another run in the top of the ninth. Fortunately, Amarillo was able to score three runs in the bottom of the ninth for a walk off win.
Luis Frias was solid enough, going 4 2⁄3 innings, with four runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk, while striking out six. Both earned runs came via a two run homer in the 5th inning. Mack Lemieux went 2⁄3 of an inning and allowed two runs on four hits. Blake Rogers went 1 2⁄3 innings, and allowed a run on a hit and a walk, with four strikeouts. Justin Lewis was next, and ended up blowing the save, allowing three runs on two hits and a hit by pitch, thanks to a two out, three run home run. Jeff Bain finished out the ninth inning, and allowed an unearned run on a hit and an error by Luis Alejandro Basabe.
Alek Thomas was 2-5 with a two run homerun, two stolen bases, and a walk. Jose Herrera and Stone Garrett were both 2-5 with a solo homerun, though Garrett was caught stealing. Renae Martinez was 1-4 with a homerun and a walk, and Luis Alejandro Basabe was 1-5 with a home run.. Mikey Reynolds was hitless, but walked and stole home. Dominic Miroglio was 1-2, but was walked three times.
Eugene Emeralds 10 Hillsboro Hops 5
Drey Jameson had a rough start, allowing eight runs on eight hits and three walks (while striking out five), while giving up a pair of home runs. Justin Vernia pitched 1 2⁄3 scoreless innings and allowed just a walk. Blake Workman pitched 2 innings, and allowed two runs on three hits with one of the runs coming via solo homer. Mailon Arroyo struck out one in a scoreless inning of relief in the eighth.
The Hops didn’t have a single extra base hit in this game, but managed to steal seven bases, with Nick Dalesandro going 1-3 with a walk and swiping two bases. Dominic Canzone was 2-4 with a sac fly and a stolen base, and Buddy Kennedy was 2-5 with a stolen base. Spencer Brickhouse and Tra Holmes were both 1-3 with a walk and a stolen base. Finally, Leodany Perez was 1-3 with a stolen base.
Visalia Rawhide 3 Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 8
Liam Norris was hit hard in his two innings of work, giving up six runs on four hits and three walks, while striking out five. Three of his four hits went for extra bases, with a double, and two home runs allowed. Liu Fuenmayor struck out one in a scoreless inning, with a hit and a walk allowed. Marcos Tineo pitched three inings, and allowed two runs on three hits, a hit batter, and two walks, while striking out three batters. Both runs came via a two run homer in the fifth inning. Bobby Ay was almost perfect, striking out three batters on ten pitches in the seventh inning. Gerald Ogando allowed a hit in a scoreless inning of work in the eighth.
AJ Vukovich went 2-3 with a two run homerun, and a walk. Jorge Barrosa was 2-4, and Jeferson Espinal was 1-3 with a double. Manuel Garcia and Ramses Malave were the only other batters to reach base, with Garcia drawing a walk, and Malave hitting a single.
Sunday 6-20
Reno Aces 7 Albuquerque Isotopes 5
Down three runs in the bottom of the seventh, the Aces plated five runs to pull ahead of the Isotopes and win this one. Zach Lee went six innings, and allowed five runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk. Lee did give up a pair of home runs, fortunately both were of the solo variety. Cameron Gann allowed a pair of hits and struck out one in a scoreless inning of work. Matt Gage was perfect in the eighth. Miguel Aguilar allowed a hit in the ninth, but kept the runner from scoring, earning the save.
Seth Beer likely had the offensive performance of the weekend, going 3-4 with a walk, a pair of doubles, and a homerun. Nick Heath was 2-4 with a triple, a walk, and a stolen base, but was caught stealing. Jamie Ritchie was 2-4 with a double. Ben DeLuzio was 1-1 with a stolen base, but left the game after that. Matt Lipka was 1-3 with a double. Drew Ellis was 1-3 with a pair of walks, and a stolen base.
Midland RockHounds 13 Amarillo Sod Poodles 3
The RockHounds had four innings that they scored at least three runs off the Sod Poodles, so this wasn’t exactly a well pitched game. Tommy Henry went 2 2⁄3 innings and allowed six runs on seven hits and two walks, while striking out four. Ryan Weiss was actually solid, going 2 1⁄3 scoreless innings, with just a hit and a walk allowed. Levi Kelly pitched two innings, and allowed three runs on two hits and three walks, while striking out four. Matt Brill struck out three and walked one in a scoreless inning of work, though he did uncork a wild pitch and hit a batter. Edgar Arredondo had a very rough ninth inning, giving up four runs on two hits (one a solo homer, the other a three run homer) and two walks, while striking out one.
The offense was lackluster in this one. The best offensive performances came from Jose Herrera, who was 2-4 with a triple and a homerun, and JanCarlos Cintron, who was 3-4 with a double. Geraldo Perdomo was hitless, but walked three times. Alek Thomas had a rough night at the plate, going 0-5 with three strikeouts.
Hillsboro Hops 5 Eugene Emeralds 7
This Game was a much closer contest than it appears at first glance. If you take out the bad outing from Nick Snyder, who went 2⁄3 of an inning, and allowed four runs on two hits and two walks, the Hops would have won this game. Kenny Hernandez got the start, went 5 1⁄3 innings, and allowed two runs on on two hits (both solo homers) and three walks, while striking out five. Overall, not that bad of an outing. Mitchell Stumpo pitched 2⁄3 of a scoreless inning, and struck out one. Stumpo was followed by Nick Synder, who I mentioned earlier. Wesley Rodriguez pitched 1 1⁄3 innings, allowing one on two hits and a walk, while striking out three. ‘
Andy Yerzy was 1-3 with a homerun and a walk. Buddy Kennedy was 2-4 with a double, a stolen base, and a run batted in. Tristin English was 1-4 with a homerun, and Spencer Brickhouse was 1-4 with a double. Dominic Canzone singled, walked, and stole a base. Tra Holmes was 2-4 with a two out RBI.
Visalia Rawhide 5 Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 24
The Dodger’s Low A affiliate set a record in runs scored for this game, and hit six homeruns against Visalia pitching. As you’d expect, the pitching in this game was awful. When Hunter Haworth technically has the best pitching performance in this game, giving up just a run on a hit, but that hit was a grand slam, you know it’s a bad game. Rigoberto Borbolla got the start, and not only could he not hit the strike zone, he couldn’t get didn’t get any outs. Borbolla issued three walks, gave up a hit, and uncorked two wild pitches before being taken out for David Sanchez. Sanchez wasn’t that much better, going just an inning and a third, giving up six runs on three walks, six hits, and a wild pitch. At that point, striking out a pair of batters doesn’t really matter when there’s three home runs allowed, including a grand slam. Enmanuel Acosta pitched 2⁄3 of an inning and allowed two runs. Adrian Del Moral went two innings, but allowed seven runs (six earned). Harrison Frances relieved Del Moral with the bases loaded, and gave up that grand slam, which is why he technically has the best pitching performance in this game. Johnny Valdez went two innings, and Harrison Francis went an inning, and both gave up two runs in their relief appearances.
As far as offensive performances go, Elian Miranda was 3-5 with a double; Sheng-Ping Chen was 2-5 with a pair of doubles. Neyfey Castillo was 1-4 with a homerun and a walk.
Monday 6-21-2021
Albuquerque Isotopes 9 Reno Aces 8
In a bullpen game, Carlos Navas was first, going two innings and giving up three runs on three hits, with three strikeouts. Navas was hit hard, with two doubles and a two run homerun allowed. Jeremy Rhoades followed with two innings of his own, with one run allowed on two hits, no walks, and a strikeout. Brandon Sittinger went only 2⁄3 of an inning, and allowed two runs on two hits and a walk, with a strikeout. Matt Gage struck out four in an inning and a third, but allowed a run on two hits thanks to a solo homerun. Alex Powers struck out one in two perfect innings. Sam Moll allowed a hit in a scoreless inning of work. With the game tied in extra innings, Cameron Gann allowed two runs (one unearned thanks to the auto-runner) on a hit and two walks (one intentional), while striking out a pair in the top of the tenth. Reno did rally in the bottom of the tenth, with Seth Beer advancing on a wild pitch, and scoring on a Drew Ellis sacrifice fly, but Jamie Ritchie flew out, and Henry Ramos grounded out end the game.
Jake McCarthy made his AAA debut, and went 1-4 with a walk and a stolen base. Henry Ramos was 1-3 with a two run homerun and a pair of walks, but was caught stealing. Jamie Ritchie was 2-3 with a walk. Seth Beer was hitless in four at bats, but walked and scored a pair of runs.
