After splitting the first two games in Washington, the Diamondbacks will now play a pair of morning games in the nation’s capitol.
Home plate umpire, Larry Vanover called a wide zone, leading to an unlikely pitching duel in Washington, D.C. Taylor Widener held his own against Max Schezer. The game was two outs from going into scoreless extras when Kyle Schwarber walked off the Nationals by launching his first home run in a Washington uniform, a 463-foot blast off of reliever Taylor Clarke.
Taylor Widener continues to impress in the Arizona rotation. On Friday, he was matched up against multi-Cy Young Award winner, Max Scherzer, who was on his game. When Widener’s night was over, the game was still scoreless,. Widener provided six scoreless innings of work against a stacked Nationals lineup.
Diamondbacks Walked Off by Schwarber
Taylor Widener provided the Diamondbacks with everything they could have possibly asked for. Unfortunately for the Diamondbacks, he was matched up against Max Scherzer, who continued his dominant ways. Scherzer struck out 10 in the contest, pushing him past Cy Young on the all-time strikeout list. He also kept the Arizona bats mostly silent. It wasn’t until the bottom of the ninth, when Kyle Schwarber swatted a home run, that the scoreless deadlock was finally broken.
