[MLBTR] D-Backs To Recall Tommy Henry, Likely To Place Merrill Kelly On IL by Anthony Franco
The Diamondbacks will recall left-hander Tommy Henry from Triple-A Reno to start tomorrow evening’s game against the Cardinals, manager Torey Lovullo told reporters (including Theo Mackie of AZ Central). Arizona optioned Henry five days ago. Pitchers need to stay on optional assignment for at least 15 days unless they’re recalled to replace a player who is going on the injured list, so Arizona will need to make an IL move tomorrow.
Lovullo confirmed that the “most likely” option would be placing Merrill Kelly on the 15-day IL, although the skipper noted that one of Arizona’s relievers could land on the shelf instead. Kelly was recently sent for imaging on his shoulder after suffering some kind of injury to his teres major muscle. The 35-year-old righty was scratched from his scheduled start yesterday as a result.
[MLB] What went wrong for Pfaadt after five by Joe Harris
Brandon Pfaadt was in complete control on Monday night, until he wasn’t.
Pfaadt was unhittable in the early going of the D-backs’ 5-3 loss in the first of a three-game series against the Cardinals at Busch Stadium.
He retired the first 12 batters he faced. Even after Nolan Arenado singled to lead off the fifth to break up the perfect game, Pfaadt responded by sandwiching strikeouts of Paul Goldschmidt and Iván Herrera around a groundout to Alec Burleson to complete a dominating five-inning stretch.
Then it fell apart.
“It was a tough one to swallow,” Pfaadt said. “You know, I felt great. Threw five innings and went back out there and tried to attack and obviously we didn’t do that.”

[MLB] We might not see a filthier strikeout for a long time by Alex Stumpf
That strikeout was already Jones’ fifth of the afternoon; he finished with seven while guiding the Bucs to a 4-2 win over the Crew.
He also upped his whiff total to 86 through the third inning Monday, giving him the most for a pitcher over their first five starts in the pitch tracking era (since 2008).

[MLB] Boone ejected just 5 pitches into game against A’s by Bryan Hoch
Have you ever seen a manager ejected for something a fan said? Neither had Aaron Boone.
Yet that is what apparently happened in the first inning of the Yankees’ 2-0 loss to the Athletics on Monday, when Boone was tossed after five pitches by home-plate umpire Hunter Wendelstedt.
The offending comment seemed to have come from a spectator sitting behind the first-base dugout.
“It’s embarrassing,” Boone said. “Just not good.”
