The Diamondbacks mounted an unlikely come-from-behind win last night and the U.S. is currently playing against Japan in the championship game at the Olympic Games.

Caleb Smith once again had his issues throwing strikes, walking six of the 13 batters he faced. He was chased after only 1 1⁄3 innings. Matt Peacock was fantastic i relief and even helped the team’s cause at the plate and on the base paths. The Diamondbacks managed to plate six runs in the fourth inning with nary an extra base hit to be found. Sean Poppen earned himself a two-inning save, almost as if the bullpen was short-handed (it was).

The Padres jumped out to an agonizingly slow 5-0 lead at the end of two innings. Arizona responded by scoring two in the third and then six more in the fourth. Nick Ahmed had a good night at the plate batting in the lead-off position. Pavin Smith had a key 10-pitch at bat in the deciding inning. The Arizona bullpen was amazing on the night.
Caleb Smith walked six batters in 1 1⁄3 innings. He also committed an error throwing to first. Nick Ahmed had his own “error” in the bottom of the ninth when he failed to make a clean play against the first batter of the frame, though there are plenty of shortstop that don’t even get there to make the play. Matt Peacock, Joe Mantiply, and Sean Poppen made sure none of that mattered. Ahmed also had a good night at the plate and contributed two defensive gems.

It’s possible that Ketel Marte might not be suited to playing center field. Who would have thought?
