Arizona Diamondbacks rally late, but drop series opener to New York Mets by José M. Romero [AZ Central]
Down four runs, the Diamondbacks came alive with three runs on three walks and singles from Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suarez. Suarez’s single traveled 412 feet and hit the center field wall on the fly, driving in two. But it wasn’t quite enough, as the Mets held on for a 5-4 win in the first of a seven-game Diamondbacks homestand against two National League division leaders, the Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers.
Late Rally comes Up Short in Diamondbacks Loss to Mets by Michael McDermott [SI]
The game started nicely for Arizona, as Corbin Carroll turned on an inside fastball from Griffin Canning for a leadoff home run. It marked Carroll’s third leadoff home run of the season, second to only Oneil Cruz of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Since the start of the 2024 season, he has seven leadoff home runs, the fourth-highest total in the major leagues.
Even with the good offensive start, the Diamondbacks struggled to string together rallies against Canning. While they got five more hits against the Mets’ starter, they were all singles. Arizona hit into two double plays, both off the bat of Josh Naylor, killing potential rallies in what was a tight game at the time.

Diamondbacks injury notes: Justin Martinez to restart throwing this week by Alex Weiner [Arizona Sports]
After his imaging came back without any structural damage, Lovullo said, “Probably him trying to explain that he has a dead arm and not really knowing it. … I don’t want people that don’t know what it means to think that his arm is not coming back. It’s just a phase or period of time where you can’t feel the strength. I just think he’s probably never had something like that before. … He’s going to be fine.”

‘They’re pretty sick’’: Arizona Diamondbacks’ players evaluate new Nike City Connect uniforms by Nick Piecoro [AZ Central]
Geraldo Perdomo: “I think they’re pretty sick. They’re beautiful. It’s like the old purple and teal that we had in 2001. Those are the best uniforms we’ve had so far. I think (purple) has been a part of the organization’s history. It’s our identity. And I like the ‘Serpientes.’”

1st MVP poll of 2025 reveals clear AL favorite, open race in NL by Jason Foster [MLB]
5. Corbin Carroll, D-backs (no first-place votes)
Carroll has been one of baseball’s early surprises in 2025. He led MLB in homers for part of the first month, and he’s continued to rake extra-base hits all over the place, including an MLB-best four triples. In fact, Carroll’s 21 extra-base hits through Sunday were tied for second-most in baseball, and his 84 total bases ranked second only to Judge. He’s never hit more than 25 homers in a season, but he’s on pace for 43 this year. He’s also on pace for 124 RBIs, which would demolish his previous career high of 76.

Poll: What Should The Red Sox Do About First Base by Nick Deeds [MLB Trade Rumors]
The Red Sox entered the 2025 season with big expectations after adding Garrett Crochet and Alex Bregman to a team that already had Kristian Campbell, Roman Anthony, and Marcelo Mayer all knocking on the door. So far, things have not gone quite as smoothly as fans in Boston were surely hoping. While the club is just two games back in the AL East, that’s with a lackluster 18-18 record thanks in part to spotty health in the rotation behind Crochet. The injury bug has now moved onto the lineup as Triston Casas has undergone season-ending surgery on his knee.
Williams wilts again, sees ERA top 10 as a Yankee by Jorge Castillo [ESPN]
Devin Williams’ nightmare season continued Monday night with another poor outing in the New York Yankees’ 4-3 loss to the San Diego Padres at a rainy Yankee Stadium.
The right-hander entered in the eighth inning with the Yankees leading 3-0. He exited with two outs — both on strikeouts — and the bases loaded after yielding a hit and two walks, leaving Luke Weaver, who recently replaced him as the club’s closer, to clean the mess. But Weaver surrendered a pair of two-run hits to squander the lead as the Yankees fell to 19-16.
