Watch: D-backs’ top prospect Alek Thomas belts 1st career home run vs. Marlins

May 12, 2022 by ArizonaSports.com - 98.7 FM

Arizona Diamondbacks top prospect Alek Thomas hit his first career home run against the Miami Marlins in Wednesday’s 7-3 loss from Chase Field.

After a stellar outing in Tuesday’s 9-3 win over the Marlins, Thomas picked up where he left off sending a blast to left-center.

The centerfielder made his major league debut for the D-backs Saturday and has quickly impressed.

Entering Wednesday, Thomas had three hits in his first 10 at-bats of his career. He’s scored twice on the season and drove in two runs on Tuesday.

Upon returning to the dugout, the rookie was given the silent treatment from his teammates before they congratulated him.

His homer in the third inning was a timely one, as the D-backs trailed 3-0 after a tough start on the mound for Merrill Kelly.

The homer marked Thomas’ fourth hit since his call up, three of them being of the extra-base variety.

Arizona would tie things up in the bottom of the eighth inning, thanks to a pinch hit two-run homer from Jordan Luplow.

The D-backs would turn to closer Mark Melancon in the ninth but the Marlins jumped all over the veteran reliever for four runs.

Miami would plate another four more runs on J.B. Wendelken in the ninth to take the game 11-3.
